THE DIDGERIDOO CHORISTERS EXPERIMENT |
Ever play in a band? Ever want to? How about a band that consists entirely of didgeridoos? Join a group of like-minded players for a musical experiment. Modeled after the more traditional “Bell Choir” concept, the didgeridoo choristers will meld a medley of well-known ditties and original tunes into a unique sound never before heard by human ears (to our knowledge). Music-reading ability is not required—we'll teach you what you need to know. Must be able to count to 2,3,4 and 6. Depending on how long it takes us to get this together, we will perform on either Saturday or Sunday evenings as part of the JT Ensemble program. Please click here to join in on the discussion. |

“How to Groove: An Introduction to Rhythmic Didgeridoo Playing” with Karl Kalbaugh |
This workshop is designed for the early intermediate player. Presumably, a student will be droning, getting some harmonic variation, has recently broken the mystery of circular breathing; and has begun wondering “… now what?” The goals of the workshop:
to demonstrate how the breath cycle is the basis for all rhythmic playing
to develop muscle memory and control in the diaphragm, cheeks, and throat;
to develop fast harmonic variation using tongue placement and changing mouth cavity geometry |
to incorporate transient (barks and yells) and more lyrical (growls and intentional creation of harmonic intervals) vocal sounds into rhythmic playing |
how to remember rhythms using imagery, mnemonics, and recording to cell phones |
and, finally, how to combine rhythmic playing into simple compositions |
As with any workshop, students may not walk away with the skill set immediately, but they will have an understanding of the components and the amount of personal practice needed to achieve results.The workshop is designed to be about 2 hours in length and may vary owing to the number of students. Community spirit will be core for the workshop, fostering the sharing of personal playing experiences – especially those that may help fellow students. |

"Bridging the gap” - Conditioning for circular breathing with Bill Hanes - 1 1/2 hour |
It has always been my belief that obtaining / not obtaining the art of circular breathing is a very critical time for most players. In the beginning it is fun to learn all kinds of sounds and techniques. Very soon after the serious players attention / obsession turns to cycle breathing to as a way to move to the next level. Unfortunately this can be an important threshold for players and can actually shape the future in the amount of involvement and enjoyment one has with the instrument. Although there are many excellent resources available about the actual steps of circular breathing, I teach a step of “conditioning” that can help players gain skill and techniques that will help them understand and make it easier to accomplish circular breathing. In this class we will cover some basic sounds and use these sounds to play rhythms without circular breathing. We will learn to separate the instrument from the breath and condition the mind to breathing in a different way. By practicing this type of playing we can help to bridge the gap to obtaining circular breathing techniques. Students will learn the ability to play with other players and drum circles while they are working on gaining experience that will help them with their cycle breathing journey. These techniques and exercises will motivate and help conquer some of the most common problems while actually gaining tools to take your playing to the next level. This workshop is geared for players that have not obtained the ability to cycle breath WELL. |

TAI CHI FOR THE WESTERN WORLD |
Free event - 8 am Thursday thru Sunday - donations gratefully accepted. David Blonski has been a practitioner and teacher of Tai Chi Chih for over 20 years. This very simple and easy to learn form of Tai Chi was developed for those of us caught up in the hectic pace of modern society with little free time on our hands and can be effectively practiced in short intervals of 15 minutes... of course longer sessions will certainly lead to even more desirable results. Tai Chi is practiced for health maintenance and increased awareness of self and life. The results of this discipline are cumulative, and life-enhancing benefits tend to unfold more fully or completely as regular involvement with this art continues. Tai Chi Chih is said to be able to take you as far as you are willing to go on the path of self-evolution and illumination so regular practice can be most helpful in achieving this end. Join David every morning at 8 am to experience 'joy thru movement' and 'peace in the midst of activity'. |
